Aniello Petito, an Italian diplomat, has just begun his journey as the new Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Astana. In this article, he shares his experiences and impressions of Kazakhstan and reflecting on his diplomatic career.
About me
I’ve been working at the Italian Embassy in Astana for just a week as the new Deputy Head of Mission. In my role, I handle various responsibilities across different sectors, including political analysis, trade, cultural events, and consular matters. The diplomatic profession has evolved significantly in recent years, becoming increasingly multidisciplinary and open to society. This shift requires a deep understanding of the local reality to respond effectively to complex external stimuli.
Before my current assignment, I served as Consul in Venezuela, a country facing a complicated historical phase. This was my first mission abroad, and I learned a great deal during my four years there. With great conviction and motivation, I decided to come to Kazakhstan, a splendid country that remains mysterious to many Italians. Recent political and economic developments, the beauty of its landscapes, and numerous international events in cities like Almaty and Astana have captured the Italian imagination. We believe that cultural cooperation is paramount to our foreign policy.
Why I chose Kazakhstan
The reasons I chose Kazakhstan are numerous. My interest in foreign cultures and my desire for personal and professional growth led me to work in a country very different from my previous posting. From my first impressions, I can affirm that it was the right choice. Kazakhstan’s cultural richness, shaped by its unique history, traumatic changes, and wonderful diversity, captivates its guests from the very beginning.
I have been struck by the Kazakhs' great attraction and fascination with Italian culture, products, and lifestyle. To enhance interaction and further open ourselves to society, we have organized numerous events under the vision of Ambassador Marco Alberti and with the significant contributions of Embassy staff. One such event was the successful exhibition of "La Bella Principessa," a breathtaking painting by Leonardo Da Vinci, at the National Museum of the Republic. This exhibition, held in collaboration with the Kazakh government and private sponsors, is open until August 4th.
Additionally, last year saw the inauguration of the first Italian Cultural Institute in Central Asia, located in Almaty. These initiatives exemplify how our relations are strengthening day by day.
What I expect from Kazakhstan
Having listened to the experiences of friends, there are many places I wish to visit and traditions I hope to experience. Understanding the country deeply is my priority for cultural and professional improvement, but above all, for personal enrichment. Besides experiencing local gastronomy in the renowned restaurants of Astana and Almaty, I plan to explore as much of Kazakhstan's extraordinary and diverse landscapes as possible, including its stunning lakes, high mountains, and western deserts.
During my initial visits, I’ve enjoyed the sounds of the dombra, the well-known national instrument, whose notes convey the essence of local values and the atmosphere of the country. Immersing oneself in the local traditions and culture is the only way to fully understand Kazakhstan, and that is exactly what I am doing.
